New Test Method for Measurement of Sub-micron Particulate Filtration Efficiency for Wearable Filter-Based Products against Solid Particulates

1. Scope

This test method establishes standardized procedures for measuring the proportion of sub-micron sized particles that pass through filter media, which are part of products that are worn by an individual on their face for purposes of either providing protection from inhalation of solid particles or source control or both. Applicable products include respirators, medical face masks, and barrier face coverings.

Rationale

Currently, Specification F3502 references the use of sub-micron particulate filtration procedures that are established as part of 42 CFR Part 84, that in turn are addressed by NIOSH Procedure No. TEB-APR-STP-0059. Some modifications are required in order for this testing to be performed on the range of different barrier face covering products. These procedures and their modifications are provided in SPecification F3502 and it has been further proposed that Specification F2100 on maerials used in medical face masks employ the same test method. The development of a standard test method will permit having a uniform set of test procedures and the benefit of interlaboratory testing for improved test consistency.
