Work Item
ASTM WK81370

New Test Method for Determining the Loss-on-Ignition of Light-Burnt Magnesium Oxide.

1. Scope

1.1 Loss on ignition (LOI) is the loss in weight expressed as percent of the initial “as received” sample weight obtained after ignition of the sample at 1000 °C to constant weight. The loss in weight is due to a release of free moisture, chemically combined “lattice” or “hydroxy” water, CO2, SO2, and volatile pyrolytic products of any organic material that may be present.

Keywords

Magnesium oxide; ignited residue; purity; activity; caustic; magnesia

Rationale

Magnesium oxide-based products offer alternatives to existing building products that are produced and used in the building industry. Test Standards for chemical and physical requirements for light- burnt magnesium oxide are required to assure suitability for use in the production of magnesium oxide products.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
