Work Item
ASTM WK81396

Revision of E8/E8M-21 Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials

Rationale

The intent of this work item is to provide clarity to the user around definitions and guidance in the procedure/reporting sections for what deems a test to be invalid, when replacement tests can be performed, when retests can be performed and recommendations on the number of tests. Definitions for acceptance test, conforming test result, invalid test, non-conforming test result, replacement test, retest, test record, test report, and valid test will be part of the ballot. These definitions will be included within the general terms section of the standard, which (when accepted) would also be included in E6 terminology and can then be applied to other standards within E28.04 (or other subcommittees). The reasons for replacement and retests specific to this standard (ASTM E8/8M) will be included within the body of the standard. For additional background, WK75117 for ASTM E21 was previously balloted (received negatives) and in working through revisions for a new ballot the working group decided it would be more appropriate to address ASTM E8/E8M first, followed by adding definitions to ASTM E6, prior to any other standard.
