New Practice for Structural Design of Thermoplastic Modular Crate Systems for Stormwater Collection

1. Scope

Provide structural design methods for buried modular stormwater crate systems used for stormwater detention, retention, and infiltration. The crates will be manufactured of thermoplastics. The structural design will look at global stability, structural design of crate details, soil-structure interaction, and application of surface live loads. The practice will identify limit states and target factors of safety.

Keywords

crate; stormwater; modular; thermoplastic; detention; retention; infiltration; soil-structure interaction

Rationale

Multiple manufacturers supply buried crate systems in the US and internationally. While there are design methods available in Europe, the US does not have an equivalent methodology. As a result, there are many instances of structural failure. Users include design engineers, manufacturers, municipal engineers, and utility agencies.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
