New Practice for - Additive Construction – General Principles – Standard Practice for the Evaluation of Structural Printed Elements

1. Scope

Specific investigations covered include surface quality; deposition rate; joint bonding; cold joints; stress testing of printed elements; overall performance of printed structures; mechanical testing; sample preparation; destructive testing; in situ testing. 3DP construction phases include design phase, mobilization or “pre-printing” phase, printing phase, commissioning phase.
Tests may be categorized as general quality control, process reliability, or proof of design. The following bullet point list represents the basis over which the Standard has been built:
This practice covers procedures and methods for evaluation of 3DP construction elements so that producers, designers and inspectors have a common expectation of available material parameters.
This practice is intended to be agnostic towards material used.
This practice does not intend to propose criteria or minimum values.
This practice is intended to specify previous ASTM/ACI/ICC standards that can be used as a reference/baseline for the current scope of work.
This practice addresses the methodologies and practices for in-situ (NDE/NDT) and lab evaluation and testing of 3D printed elements and their constituent extruded material
This practice specifies execution and quality requirements that should be provided during the testing and evaluation process.
This practice is not intended to overwrite any Building Code requirements.
Units - The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale

There is no current standard for the Evaluation and Testing of Printed Elements in Additive Construction to this day. As a constantly evolving industry which has been showing an increase in speed of development and of adoption, standardization is becoming the key to democratize and to make Additive Technology in the Construction Industry readily accessible to the public .
As current WKs are developing and working on the Design of Printed Elements in Additive Construction, the purpose of the group I am proposing is to look at Additive Construction from a Life-Cycle perspective.
It's necessary, in order to guarantee the safety of the public and to properly train the professionals in the engineering, construction, inspection and approval process of the Additive Construction industry, to provide a Standard that addresses the Testing and Evaluation procedures and methodologies for new and existing printed elements and materials.
The standard will not only provide guidance of the methods, but also will address the issue of Systems Dynamics, from a perspective of extending the life of the built product and potential changes in the destination of use.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
