New Test Method for Measuring the Effect of Filterability of Engine Oils After Treatment with Water and Carbon Dioxide

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of the tendency of an oil to form a precipitate that can plug an oil filter. It simulates a problem that may be encountered in a new engine run for a short period of time, followed by a long period of storage with some water in the oil. Compared to ASTM D6795, the carbon dioxide is added as gas instead of dry ice at an increased temperature.

Rationale

Requested by vehicle OEMs to be incorporated into new Engine Oil Specification for light duty vehicles in understanding the filter plugging tendency of oils. It would help to determine if oils would create filter plugging and cause failures in vehicles. Users would be engine oil formulators looking to meet specification limits.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
