Revision of C1063-22a Standard Specification for Installation of Lathing and Furring to Receive Interior and Exterior Portland Cement-Based Plaster
Rationale
1. For years C1063 has recognized “stub” nails of ¾-inch length for use in attaching lath and accessories to solid substrates. The fact is that this is incorrect terminology not supported by the ASTM Standards for nails, F1667.
2. F1667 recognizes “Masonry Stub Nails” and specifies their acceptable properties in Table 23 (below).
3. Currently C1063 requires a ¾-inch nail for the permanent attachment of lath to solid substrates. Unfortunately, ¾-inch nails will usually spall a concrete block if driven anywhere within about 1½ inches of the edge. The common practice is to use a 3/8-inch stub nail for this purpose which leaves you in violation of the standard. Therefore, we propose to add 3/8-inch stub nails to the standard where lath or accessories are intended to be attached to solid bases in a non-structural capacity and only as a temporary attachment until the plaster has bonded to the solid base.
