New Specification for Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs)
1. Scope
1.1 This is a manufacturer quality control specification.
1.2 This specification covers requirements and test methods for turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) used in unvegetated and vegetated applications.
1.3 Proper materials are critical to the effective performance of TRMs. This specification presents requirements for TRMs that have been shown to result in TRM installations that effectively reinforce vegetation and, thereby, provide effective erosion control.
1.4 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, is any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale
The Erosion Control Technology Council (ECTC) and other organizations have had specifications for rolled erosion control products for over 20 years. Organizations such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have adopted ECTC specifications. It will be helpful to have standard specifications for Turf Reinforcement Mats at ASTM for many reasons, including for manufacturer quality control purposes and to reference these specifications within several existing ASTM standards. TRM Specifications were balloted a few times at ASTM before, but consensus was not reached. The industry needs an ASTM TRM Specification.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
