Revision of A848-17 Standard Specification for Low-Carbon Magnetic Iron

Rationale

This draft revision of ASTM A848-17 Standard Specification for Low-Carbon Magnetic Iron expands acceptable material sources from "producers" to "producers and suppliers." This additional verbiage creates a more inclusive trade environment by enabling intermediate parties to qualify low carbon magnetic iron to this standard specification.

There is a particularly critical need for this revision in instances where producers generate a material that meets the technical requirements of the standard specification, but don't include all of the necessary information from Table 1 (Chemical Composition Requirements) or Table 2 (Maximum Direct Current Coercive Field Strength) in the material test report. This draft revision allows intermediate and independent parties to generate acceptance values and reports, as well as define mutually agreed upon terms with the user regarding Ordering Information (Section 4), Form and Condition (Section 6), & Magnetic Property Requirements (Section 7). Furthermore, the changes in this draft revision aim to align the text of this standard specification with the related ASTM A1126-23 Standard Specification for Magnetic Pure Iron.
