ASTM WK90491

Revision of A414/A414M-23 Standard Specification for Steel, Sheet, Carbon, and High-Strength, Low-Alloy for Pressure Vessels

Rationale

Discussion held at the May 2024, A01.19 meeting, identified known examples of insufficient testing of ASTM A414 coils that were tested on a heat lot basis. In consideration of the critical applications associated with pressure vessel steel, to safeguard the end use application from potential catastrophic failure, ASTM A414 shall require tensile testing to be performed on a minimum of three tension coupons secured from the front, middle, and rear locations from every coil, as required in ASTM A20 (General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels), Section 11.1.2 (Plates Produced from Coil and Furnished without heat Treatment or with Stress Relieving Only).
Additional clean-up was also addressed by removing the potentially misleading section 4.1.1.1, and removing the definition of the term "Lot" from the Terminology section, since this term is no longer referenced in A414.
