New Specification for Open-Cell Spray-Applied Polyurethane Thermal Insulation

1. Scope

1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers the physical properties of open-cell spray-applied open-cell polyurethane foam, hereinafter referred to as ocSPF, intended for use as thermal insulation. This material is defined for this document as foam with an open-cell content of no less than 80%, and a density no less than 0.42 lb./ft.3 (6.8 kg/m3 ) and no greater than 0.75 lb./ft3 (12 kg/m3 22 ). The operating temperatures of the surfaces to which the insulation is applied shall not be lower than -20 °F (-28.9 °C) or greater than +225 °F (+107.2 °C). For specific applications, the actual temperature limits shall be those as agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.

This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C16 Thermal Insulation and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C16.22 . Current edition approved XXX. XX, XXXX. Published XX XXXX. DOI: XXXXX-XX.

NOTE 1: Users of this standard may wish to consult standard specifications C1029, D5469 27 and D7435, which treat other types and end-uses of spray-applied polyurethane foam.

NOTE 2: Users may wish to consult standard practice C1848, for general installation considerations for high-pressure spray polyurethane foams, other than roofing foams. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are for information only and not considered standard.

1.2 When installed in certain building construction or mechanical applications, a vapor diffusion retarder will be necessary. The selection of a suitable vapor diffusion retarder is outside the scope of this document.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, is any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 The use of the thermal insulation material covered by this specification has the potential to be regulated by building codes that address fire performance. For some end uses, specifiers must also address the effect of moisture. Guidelines regarding these end use considerations are included in Section 1.3, Annex A1 and Appendix X1.

Keywords

spray foam, polyurethane, thermal insulation, open cell

Rationale

Currently, ASTM C1029 is the specification that applies to medium density, closed cell, spray polyurethane foam. This standard applies to low density, open cell, spray polyurethane foam. There are differences between close and open cell spray foam including application, performance, and other factors that necessitate this specification.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
