New Test Method for the traction performance of lubricating greases using the mini traction machine

1. Scope

This test method covers a procedure for determining the traction performance of lubricating greases using a ball on disk tribometer operating under mixed sliding and rolling conditions (mini traction machine).

Keywords

Lubricating grease; traction; sliding and rolling; mini traction machine

Rationale

Greases are widely used in the rail industry for a range of applications. One such use is in the rail-wheel contact where grease products are used to control friction and noise. This standard focusses on determining the performance of greases used in the flange area of the wheel, known as Flange Lubricants and Dual Use Lubricants (which can be used for either the flange and the top of the rail). One industry accepted method for determining this performance of flange lubricants is through the generation of a creep curve.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
